How to Make Sand Bags
If you live on or near water, or in a low-lying area, you will want to know how to make sand bags in case of flood. You can make these bags and keep them ready to be filled with sand at a moment's notice. Of course, you will need to have ready access to sand or gravel when the time comes to prevent damage of your property from flood waters.
Making a basic sandbag
Cut fabric approximately 24 inches by 30 inches. This does not have to be an exact measurement. It works best to cut a dozen or more at a time and then stitch them up at the same time.Lay the fabric on a flat surface, printed side up (if it has a pattern). Fold in half so that you have a square 12 inches by 15 inches. Fold all of the fabric that you cut in Step 1 the same way and stack the pieces for sewing.Stitch one short side and the long side with a tight stitch, at least 12 stitches per inch. The tight stitch makes the bag stronger.Turn all of the bags so that the printed side is out and lay them flat to be stored for emergency use. Cut the twine in 24-inch lengths and store the bags and twine together.Fill the bags with sand or gravel when needed for emergency and tie the top securely.
